One European automaker which has yet to be featured here on Generation Gap is Audi, so today we take a look at the company’s littlest cars from the ‘70s to the ‘90s: the venerable 80 series! From a little rebadged Passat to a bona fide sports saloon boasting the latest in Quattro technology, which little Audi 80 is your favorite? (Don’t fret about the latest A4s; those will show up next week!)

First Generation [1972 - 1978] B1 and facelift

Oooh, me likey. The only reason I chose this one is because it was one of the least beat-up (on Wikimedia Commons) and because I have this weird thing for aero-style wheel covers on square cars.

I know someone who owned various late model 80s, but I don’t remember much about them.

The B1 is a bit too run of the mill as far a engines go, and the B3 was nerfed in favour of the 90. The B4 is probably the best car here, being an improvement on the already good B3 and having the merit of being related to the amazing Porsche developed RS2 Avant.

But my favourite is the B2. Why? Well, when optioned with 4WD it was literally just a 4-door UrQuattro minus the turbo. Also the Coupé version looked really pretty, even in standard guise. I know the cheaper models were a bit of a dog, and that later 80s were improved in nearly every way - but simply for the dynamics of the 4WD version and the looks of the Coupé, I like the B2. I doubt it’s the best car here, but it has the most identity.

Well the UrQuattro was a B2 so in theory you could have the real deal!

Besides, saying the new ones are better is like saying a 2002 Corolla is going to be better than an AE86...of course it’s better, but which would you rather have?

It’s 10v, but still sounds good. The US only got 20v’s in the 90, CQ, 200 Turbo, and S4/S6.

I’m border-line Gen Y - Gen Z (1995). Some sources say 1993, some say 1998. I just stay up way too late roads useless info on old cars.

I know alot of unusual cars like daihatsus and stuff ive never seen here, it’s just I dont know alot about cars made before 1979 that aren’t American or Japanese or sold in Canada.

B3 and B4 Audi 80s have such great longevity and have good rust protection. I still see them kinda regularly.
